The Science Behind Windows & Energy Efficiency
When choosing a window replacement system, it’s important to understand the science behind your energy efficiency options. To qualify for Energy Star status, window manufacturers must meet standards of ratings by the National Fenestration Rating Council. These four factors are all important to consider when choosing a window replacement system:
U-Value - also referred to as U-factor, U-Value measures a window's resistance to heat loss and usually ranges from 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the number, the better the window is at keeping heat in.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) - measures how much heat enters a home through the glass and usually ranges between 0 and 1. The lower the number, the better the window is at blocking unwanted heat from the sun.
Visible Transmittance - indicates how much visible light a window lets in and is between 0 and 1. As the number increases, so does the light.
Low-E Coating - a transparent coating is used to cover glass panes and improve the efficiency of the glass by reflecting heat while letting light in.
